In the Islamic faith SAWS is an abbreviation used to spell Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam which is an Arabic term that reads as, May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. It is a reverential greeting applied by the Muslims whenever uttering the name of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The phrase is an embodiment of love, respect and submission towards the Prophet and is a significant component of Islamic manners. The act is entrenched in the Islamic religion and is promoted by the Quran and Hadith.

In the Quran, Allah orders Muslims (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:56):”Verily, Allah and His angels shower blessings on the Prophet. O you that believe, salutation to him, and grace to him: (Such, O ye believers, is your salutation and your grace). The basis of saying SAWS or chanting of Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam after the name of the Prophet when he is heard or mentioned is contained in this verse. It is not only a feature of honor but it also rewards the believer with enormous spiritual favors since every Muslim who sends blessings to the Prophet is rewarded by Allah because He will send blessings to him or her.

Application of SAWS is also used to keep the memory and teachings of prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in living memory and mind of Muslims. It binds together the spiritual relation of believer with the Prophet further enhancing the love and admiration Muslims are urged to develop to him. Declaring SAWS is not a ritual formality, but it is a prayer out of the depth of the heart and means to preserve the spiritual humility in each word that is used daily in life.

The abbreviation related to the convenience, such as Saws usually used in written form especially in the Islamic books, articles and messages. Nevertheless, researchers suggest that one is to pronounce the complete expression out loud or write the whole out when feasible, in order to maintain the sceptred and blessings of the same. The uniform application in the use of SAWS is a sign of commitment by a Muslim to respect the Prophet and act to his example faithfully and truthfully.

In general, the employment of SAWS is a rather easy but significant tradition in the lives of Muslims. It is a continuous reminder on how noble the character of a Prophet was, the sacrifices he made to the Ummah (Muslim community) and how he was the final messenger of Allah. With love and intent Muslims not only perform a religious obligation, but also feed their own hearts with the light of remembrance and respect.
