The Traditions of Salaam

Salaam (Islamic greeting of peace) is one of the most popular traditions which are central in the teachings of Islamic religions and impose the principle of peace, brotherhood, and mutual respect. The very name, Salaam is based on the Arabic matrix word, S-L-M, which is also the same root of Islamic and Muslim that are all focused on peace and obedience to Allah. The common greeting in Islam is As-Salaamu Alaik-um (peace be upon you) and the well acceptable response is Wa Alaikum As-Salaam (and on you be peace). This salutation not merely is a formality and courtesy but a significant gesture of sowing peace and happiness among persons and societies.

Giving of Salaam was also greatly promoted by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and thus he encouraged its use in ensuring mutual bonds between the faithful. He once stated that no one will be able to get into Paradise until one believes and no one will be able to believe until one loves each other. I shall not tell thee of a thing which, though thou do itest, thou mayst) love one another. Once the people you love have accepted Islam, do spread the salaam among yourselves” (Sahih Muslim). Such hadith demonstrates that the greeting of people with peace is not merely a good etiquette but a way to faith, love and finally Paradise.

The offering of Salaam is not restricted to some situations or individuals: it is a general greeting among the Muslim community, regardless of racial, national, and social background. Muslims are encouraged to offer Salaam to friends, strangers in the street or even when passing one or the other in the street. The Prophet also instructed that a rider ought to greet a walker, walker greet a sitter and the lesser in number greet the larger number. These are some of the guidelines that depict the humility and activism that Islam propagates in the construction of a peaceful society.

The etiquette of Salaam too comprises beautiful and deep details. An example is that when one walks into a room and people are seated then it is Sunnah (prophetic tradition) to greet him. Similarly, a person who goes and reaches back after a certain time after he/she leaves must wish them again. This shows the extent to which the Islamic behavior is influenced by respect and politeness. Salaam is a process of continuous creation of harmony and amendment of social relations by kindness and peace.

Also, the response to Salaam is not voluntary, it is an obligation. Allah orders in the Quran: “When you are greeted with a greeting, greet in place with something better, or the latter one at least. Indeed, Allah files everything into consideration, (Surah An-Nisa 4:86). Here, this verse not only emphasizes the need to reciprocate the Salaam but it also promotes the spirit to go the extra mile. An example of this is that when one says As-Salaamu Alaikum, the best respond would be either Wa Alaikum As-Salaam wa Rahmatullah or even Wa Alaikum As-Salaam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh meaning to extend my goodwill and other blessings.

The same applies with the Salaam tradition which helps in diffusing the hostility and misunderstanding. When the initiation of relationships starts with an honest greeting of peace, the conflicts will be smoothed out and even the difficult relationships will be a little easier to manage. In a sense, the greeting is used as a social and theological bridge of a psychological and spiritual connection between the persons as it cultivates a spirit of association and reminds both interlocutors about what they both have in common, which is being Muslims. It acts as an ever present reminder that peace and mutual respect is what the core of Islam is all about.

Put simply, Salaam traditions comprise the core of the Islamic morals- spreading the peace, showing humility, and encouraging people to love and be united. It is a down to earth yet fundamental practice which, when followed, changes relations and places. In conciliating and returning Salaam faithfully and regularly, Muslims are brought into harmony with the pure nature of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and are making our social fabric more humane and more spiritually oriented.
