Imam in Islam is a very important position which has religious, social as well as political duties to play in the Muslim society. In the simplest meaning, an Imam is a person who leads the prayer (salah), one who leads the congregation in their daily worship, particularly, in the five daily prayers, the Friday (Jumu,a) prayer and other congregational devotional activities. Such a leadership is not limited to reading verses and announcing them - it should be a person who knows a great deal about Islamic teachings, has a good character and can be the moral and spiritual leader of other people.

In addition to leading prayers, Imam is very instrumental in helping and educating the community in quran, hadith, and Islam jurisprudence in the form of teaching and educating. Most of the Imams preach once a week and cover whatever is topical, refer the community to what they need to do religiously and give reflections as to what the Islamic teachings mean to people in their day to day situations. These sermons are critical when it comes to reinforcing the spiritual health of the members and promoting a better appreciation of the religion. In most instances, the Imam also coordinates educational activities, Quran courses, and talks among the children and the adults.

An Imam usually acts as a counselor and adviser to the members of the community. The subjects that people need the guidance of the Imam include marriage, family squabbling, money-related issues, as well as personal difficulties. Since the Imam is regarded as an educated and godly person, his advice is taken into account, and in many cases observed as some form of religious mediation. Wisdom and empathy of the Imam can help solve disagreements and preserve peace among the people of the community. His position thus spreads to the sphere of social services, emotional support that bring a certain feeling of comfort and steadiness.

The imams are also involved in carrying out life ceremonies and religious events that are important. The Imam also plays a crucial role in as far as officiating marriages to leading funeral prayers ( Salat al-Jankah ). He makes sure that all these occasions are carried out in an Islamic manner. In the season of Ramadan, the Imam can conduct a night prayer (Taraweeh) daily and offer talk to develop the spiritual mood. In the period of crisis or misfortune, such as the death of somebody or other disasters, the presence and words of Imam brings comfort and reminds the faithful of their faith, endurance and the bounty of Allah.

The Imam is also the linking agent between the Muslim community and the other community in most societies, especially so in the Western societies or the minority-Muslim societies. He can lead mosques and participate in interfaith discussions, make speeches in community gatherings or be before the media explaining an issue in the Islamic faith. This role is associated with the right balance between religious integrity and cultural accommodation since the Imam should not only guard the Muslim values but also open bridges of communication with other groups. His example of leadership works to fight against stereotypes and to preach peace among nations.

Requirements of an Imam are covered by academic achievements, however, they are also tied to personal behavior and trustworthiness. A well-respected Imam must use all his actions to reflect the teachings of the Islamic faith- he has to be honest, humble, caring and patient. He has to be a leader in the field by setting an example on the definition of living a life with devotion to Allah. Such Imams are generally community selected people who should be in possession of religious sciences but are easy to approach and acceptable to the society so they are able to communicate with people belonging to various backgrounds as well as age groups.

To sum up, the Imam is a pillar of Islamic communal existence, leading folks in worship, educating and supporting them as well as setting an example of the Islamic values. His position demands a peculiar mixture of scholarship, leadership and sense of compassion. Although his major task is leading prayers, his influence goes much beyond the prayer mat to cover all spheres of the religious and social life of the community. A good Imam is at the same time a teacher and a servant who leads Muslims towards Allah also making the ties between people and families more strong.
