The prayer hall (also called praying hall) in a mosque is the core-center of the mosque where the followers of Islam assemble and worship God on a daily basis (five times a day), during special events like the Friday congregational and on religious holidays. It is the religious center of the mosque that is built to be simple and reverent in order to enhance concentration and calmness. The hall tends to be a spacious place without furnishings so that worshipers form straight lines during prayer. The style stresses simplicity and equality since all Muslims are lined up shoulder to shoulder and irrespective of their social and economic belonging and they face toward qiblah which is the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca.

The prayer hall is designed in such a way that the architectural pattern indicates the value of straight lines of vision and orientation. In front of the hall is the mihrab, a niche on the wall, showing qiblah. The position of focus makes sure that the congregation is facing the right direction toward prayer. The importance of mihrab is highlighted in most of the mosques with its elaborate decorations in calligraphy and geometric designs. The imam is the one who conducts the prayer in a place in front of mihrab and orients the worshippers according to the movements and recitation as prescribed.

The prayer rug or sajjada is one of the most unique aspects in the prayer hall. Such rugs are usually placed in straight rows, and it contributes to the preservation of straight lines during the congregation. Wall to wall carpets having wall to wall decorations are seen in floor floors of some mosques and these carpets are designed beautifully using motifs that symbolize Islamic art and culture. These were not mere decoration pieces but they also have a practical aspect to them, like, creating a clean and comfortable place where worshipers kneel down and prostrate themselves in prayer.

Prayer carpets are handled with care and respect and this indicates the sacredness of the prayer place. Personal worshipers are also allowed to bring their own prayer rugs especially in larger groups or when the prayer session is held outdoors. Such personal carpets are usually easy to carry and are commonly found in houses, schools and offices and through this the Muslims can observe their prayers and time more easily. The prayer rug is a reminder of piousness and motivation whether collective or individual as it is a mark of holy ground so that spiritual affiliation can occur.

The prayer hall floor and the plan is well taken care of and looks clean thus ensuring the value of cleanliness is maintained in the Islamic religion. The manner in which worshippers use their hands, knees, and faces to touch the floor when prayer is being performed means that this place in the location cannot be dirty and contaminated in some way. Most of the mosques have workers or volunteers whose duty is to wash the carpets on a regular basis and feet are never allowed to enter the prayer steward when they are wearing shoes. This is a reflection of the hygiene to clean up that enhances spiritual purity and calmness which the prayer hall is supposed to provide.

During non-prayer time the prayer hall vibrates with silence and thought. The worshipers can sit in silence and read the Quran, engage in self supplication (dua) or engage in contemplation. The sound proofing arrangement is to enable the voice of the imam to be audible in the whole hall when prayer is being offered and in most halls there are sound systems which facilitate this arrangement. The aspect of lighting is not also ignored and usually the natural light is used to generate a serene uplifting environment.

The prayer hall and the prayer rugs in essence form a holy enclave whereby Muslims are able to disengage themselves with their secular life and concentrate on their relationship with Allah. The aesthetic appeal of this place, the hygiene and the silence is to motivate piety, piousness and collectivism of the believers. It is not only about the big mosque, but even a small one as the prayer hall consists of the universal principles of the Islamic worship, a resting place of the soul.
