Hadith in Islam represents written utterances, acts and consents as well as silent glances of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). These are narrations which have been very essential in comprehending and practicing the Islamic religion. Although Quran is the major and most prominent book of Islam, Hadith aims at giving practical background and guidance to the use of the teachings of the Quran in day to day life. Since the Hadith assists Muslims in interpreting God commandments, besides, introduces the ideal personality and the conduct of Prophet, it is recognized as a highly essential source of instructions, second to the Quran in importance.
Barring detailed narrations, hadiths are divided into categories depending on authenticity and the series of narrators who passed that information on. The most popular and the most esteemed collections of Hadith are the Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Throughout the centuries, scholars have devoted great efforts to carry on with the preservation of these narrations, confirm them and classify them. To secure credibility of the reports, they came up with rigorous science referred to as Ilm al-Hadith. This involved looking at the memory, integrity and conformity of the narrators and the very text of the Hadith in itself.
All Hadith contain two sections, the Isnad (chain of transmission) and the Matn (actual content or text). A powerful and uninterrupted Isnad is essential as far as the Hadith is concerned to be given an authentic status. After this, Hadiths are classified under a category such as Sahih (Authentic), Hasan (Good) and DaIf (Weak). Islamic law (Shariah) and the personal and communal behaviour are founded on verifiable Hadiths to determine the rules based on the acceptable practice in Islamic teachings. They discuss all areas of life rights to prayer, charity, ethics, social relations, and governance.
The Hadith also represents the wisdom and mercy of the Prophet which helps to know about his personality and how he tackled different people regarding some situations that occurred. It educates Muslims to grow up with good character and know how to associate with others as well as perform his religious duties in a sincere and compassionate manner. Examples of Hadiths include the recommendation to be kind to the neighbors, honest in the business, love of fellow Muslims and patience during distress. The Hadith helps a lot to make the practical realization of Islamic teachings much clearer or complete without it.
In short, Hadith bridges the gap between the Muslims and the life and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It gives right on the spot illustration of Islam being practiced and adds value to the Quran by showing the meaning attached to its words. Through Hadith not only do the Muslims get informed about the divine commands but intoxicated by the model of the Prophet to lead an equitable, just and faithful life. Learning about Hadith is therefore important in case one wants to know more about Islam and practice its way in truth.
