Marriage among Muslims is a holy and blessed experience to establish a stable and healthy society as it is one of the main structures of the Islamic faith. It is not only a social agreement but a spiritual pact that is dictated by the rights and duties towards each other as well as compassion. The Quran describes marriage as the manifestation of mercy and love of Allah and states that spouses are vestments to each other and refers to it symbolically and describes these garments as the protective, warm and close sanctity. Such devout view creates the significance of emotional and spiritual balance in life in marriage.
Both the husband and wife in Islam have well defined rights and duties which work towards respect and cooperation. The male provides financially to the family and the female is honored as the custodian of the home and retoicer of children. Nevertheless, Islam also promotes mutual responsibility, caring nature, and empathy. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was very beautiful in the way that he assisted his household and was patient with his wives, treated them fairly and lovingly.
The important factors in a happy and lasting Islamic marriage are communication, compassion and forgiveness. Islam acknowledges that differences can and are likely to occur; however it has taught the couples on how to solve the differences through wisdom, patience and trying hard to reconcile. Marriage is a partnership based on cooperation as well as mutual respect as the culture promotes the idea of shura (mutual consultation) as a way of decision-making in the family.
Finally, being a spouse under the Islamic faith is a learning experience, religious walk, and friendship. It is not only a source of meeting emotional and physical needs but also allows each of the spouses to feel closer to Allah because of love, mercy, and responsibility. Marriage in its Islamic view turns out to bring peace (sakinah), pleasures, and spiritual satisfaction to the man and the woman when it is practiced under Islamic guidelines.
